The transformation of the former BBC headquarters (1930) in a university campus with offices, educational spaces, medical clinics and pubs for students, has also made necessary fire resistance certification of the supporting structures. Since this is an unusual and particular constructive system, an experimental test has been conducted in a laboratory for evaluating the fire resistance of the floor protected from intumescent paint.

The monumental historical building housing the University Compartment of Alma Mater Studiorum of Bologna, containing part of the research and educational activities of the Visual, Performing and Multimedia Arts Department, as well as the Library of Music and Entertainment, is now subject to the constraints of the Superintendence for Architectural Heritage and Landscape of Emilia-Romagna. The fire safety design of this university complex is presented with a number of exceptions to regulatory points which could not be fulfilled, given the precious nature of the analysed structure, bound by the Superintendence for Architectural Heritage and Landscape of Emilia Romagna.

The activity carried out regarded only the Sala Polifunzionale Interrata (Multipurpose Underground Room), extended on two levels, relating to the "Franco Parenti" theatre in Milan. The underground room is characterized by a total area of about 200 m². Analyses regarded design solutions suitable for leisure centres and places and social aggregation with high crowding, combining the study of occupants and size of smoke evacuation systems according to design solutions developed through the Fire Safety Engineering Principles. In this regard adequate levels of security in terms of protection of human life were provided.
